Description

The JAUNT program is a regional transportation system providing service to residents in five counties in central Virginia. JAUNT's eighty-vehicle fleet carries the general public, agency clients, the elderly, and persons with disabilities throughout Central Virginia. Agencies pay an hourly fee of $37 for the service and nonagency users pay an average of $3 per ride. About one-third of JAUNT users reside in rural areas. Users must make reservations at least 24 hours in advance. The participating local governments own JAUNT, which uses federal and local funding to supplement fares and agency payments.

Goal / Mission

The goal of this program is to provide affordable public transportation in central Virginia.

Results / Accomplishments

In fiscal year 2003, JAUNT provided nearly 250,000 trips, 80,000 of which were paid for by human service agency passengers traveling to medical appointments, supported employment, and nutrition and other support services. About one third of JAUNT users reside in rural areas. Among the clients served are participants in the Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW), the state TANF program. VIEW participants receive free transportation to and from job readiness and training classes, employment, day care, and approved educational classes.

An Effective Practice meets the following HCI criteria:

  1. The program description includes at a minimum: the sponsoring organization, program goals, program implementation steps, and outcomes that have demonstrated program success and/or promise in achieving the program goal in one or more localities.
  2. The results from an evaluation of the program include quantitative measures of improvement in outcome of interest (i.e. increase in voter registration, not just delivery of voter registration drive) and/ or the outcome measure is increased or improved compared to the baseline measurement or the control group but the difference is not statistically significant.
