Illicit Drug Use

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2018-2020
This indicator shows the percentage of people aged 12 or older who used an illicit drug in the month preceding the survey. Illicit drugs include marijuana, cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, or prescription-type drugs used nonmedically.

Why is this important?

Illicit drug use refers to the use and misuse of illegal or controlled drugs. Although there has been a long-term decrease in overall use, many people in the United States still use illicit drugs. Use of illicit drugs is highest among young people aged 15-25 years. Drug dependence is a chronic, relapsing disorder which often results in self-destructive and criminal behavior. Illegal use of drugs is also associated with injury, illness, high-risk sexual activity, disability, domestic violence, crime, school truancy, lost workplace productivity, and death. The stigma attached with substance abuse increases the severity of the problem.
